Staff Appreciation: John "JJ" Markiewicz of the Office of Academic Computing

John “JJ” Markiewicz serves as a programmer on the Department of Psychiatry’s Office of Academic Computing (OAC) Software Development Team. The OAC works to advance the technological capacity and opportunities of our research community. We would like to express gratitude for JJ’s invaluable contributions to these efforts.

JJ has been with the OAC for nearly five years, and develops web applications for participant and research staff data entry, and develops Microsoft Access portals for research staff to use with research participant recruitment and tracking, as well as data retrieval. JJ is also the Department expert with National Institute of Mental Health Data Archive data submission, and has worked with the system for over a decade. 

Katy Zeglen, Research Project Coordinator with the Regulation of Emotion in Autistic Adults, Children, and Teens (REAACT) Program, has worked extensively with JJ, and said of his efforts on a major project: “Over multiple weeks, there was a ton of testing, tweaking, and back and forth with the Access database JJ created for our study. Many of the changes were due to investigator decisions, but some were just bugs; regardless of their nature, JJ was an unbelievably patient and efficient rockstar at fixing things, rolling out new versions, and being incredibly communicative and helpful to everyone on our team.  No matter how big or small the ask/task, JJ manages to give each plenty of his time and attention—to the point where a few employees were shocked when I mentioned that he wasn’t ‘ours’ and worked on other projects!  Simply put, JJ is a superhero database administrator.”
