Pitt Psychiatry Faculty Members & Residents Recognized at American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Annual Meeting
The 70th annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), held in October 2023 highlighted and honored the innovative clinical and research achievements of Pitt Psychiatry faculty and trainees.
AACAP Distinguished Fellows
Heather Joseph, DO (Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics), and Justin Schreiber, DO, MPH (Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics) were named AACAP Distinguished Fellows.
Dr. Joseph completed her psychiatry residency training at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in the Psychiatry Research Pathway, followed by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinical fellowship, and research training through the Department’s National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH)-funded child and adolescent psychiatry T32 program. Her research focuses on the early identification of precursors to the development of psychiatric disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She currently leads a NARSAD Young Investigator Award, an NIMH R34 study testing a behavioral intervention for sleep among preschool children at risk for ADHD, and an NIMH K23 award focused on newborns and infants at risk for developmental disorders.
Dr. Schreiber completed Triple Board residency training at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, and a fellowship in community psychiatry. At UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Dr. Schreiber is medical director of hospital-based outpatient services, working with psychiatry and therapy in conjunction with physical medical services. In addition, he was instrumental in the development of and now serves as medical director of the Whole Child Wellness Clinic, which provides integrated physical and behavioral health for psychiatrically and developmentally complex children.
Beatrix A. Hamburg, MD, Award for Best New Research Poster by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident
Jessica Stephens, DO (PGY5 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow), received the 2023 Beatrix A. Hamburg, MD, Award for Best New Research Poster by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident for her poster, “Effectiveness of an Information Guide on Pediatric Psychiatric Hospitalization to Improve Parent Satisfaction with Care.”
Educational Outreach Program
Kalika Mahato, MD (PGY1), and Jessica Stephens, DO, were selected as recipients of the AACAP Educational Outreach Program for General Psychiatry Residents, which enables residents to receive a formal overview of child and adolescent psychiatry, establish mentorship relationships with distinguished life members, and attend the AACAP Annual Meeting.
AACAP Election Results
Sansea Jacobson, MD (Associate Professor of Psychiatry) was elected AACAP Councilor-at-Large.
