What We Have Learned from Decades of Treatment Prediction - Predicting TMS Treatment Response in Depression using Machine Learning

Helmet Karim, PhD Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Bioengineering

We're starting off the new year with presentations by two of our talented researchers, Heather Joseph, DO and Helmet Karim, PhD, as part of our Researchers on the Rise lecture series.

Dr. Heather JosephEarly Signals of Risk for Developing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Heather Joseph, DO is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. Her research focuses on the early identification of risk and resilience factors associated with later development of psychopathology, namely attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Her presentation will review research that supports her mentored career development award that aims to examine early signal of inattention in infants and toddlers at familial risk for ADHD. This presentation will also provide an overview the research methods for the mentored career development award project as well as recently funded projects that will add functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy to examine neural underpinnings of early developing attention.

Dr. Helmet KarimWhat We Have Learned from Decades of Treatment Prediction - Predicting TMS Treatment Response in Depression using Machine Learning

Helmet Karim, PhD is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Bioengineering. His research concentrates primarily on development of machine learning models for improving disease prevention and clinical treatment. This presentation will focus primarily on his mentored career development award which aims to develop a machine learning model to predict TMS treatment response in major depressive disorder using neuroimaging. Additionally, he will use this approach to identify neural markers of response and test its generalizability and robustness to various factors. It will also cover some of his work with treatment prediction in depression, a summary of the previous literature supporting the award, as well as a summary of the proposed grant.
