Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award

The Sleep Research Society has presented Daniel J. Buysse, MD with the 2015 Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award.  The award was presented to Dr. Buysse for his outstanding efforts in disseminating basic or clinical sleep and circadian research as a mentor, teacher and through public education.

"I am deeply honored to receive this award from the Sleep Research Society," said Dr. Buysse. "I am also profoundly grateful to the many people who have helped me to become a better educator over time: First, to my mentors, David Kupfer, Chip Reynolds, and Tim Monk, who not only helped me to learn about sleep, circadian rhythms, and clinical research, but who also modeled generosity and a deep interest in training and education. Second, to my many informal mentors, especially Tom Roth, Jim Walsh, Sonia Ancoli-Israel, and Wally Mendelson, whose interest in my early career gave me the encouragement to persevere. Third, to the large number of students, trainees, and colleagues with whom I have had the privilege to work: You have educated me much more than the other way around, and I appreciate your willingness to let me practice on you!?

Dr. Buysse is the UPMC Endowed Chair in Sleep Medicine and Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical and Translational Science, and an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis, assessment, pathophysiology, and treatment of insomnia.  He also serves as the Director of the Clinical Research Resources and Facilities Core of the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and co-directs the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center and the Pittsburgh Sleep Medicine Institute.  Dr. Buysse has more than 27 years of experience conducting clinical and translational research in sleep medicine, and has mentored 21 post-doctoral fellows, serving as the primary research mentor for 11 of these trainees. Many of his mentees have established successful careers in academic research, serving as Principal Investigators with NIH R-series grant funding and as the first author on more than 60 peer-reviewed publications in scientific and medical journals.
