Resources

Our Department has been a leading recipient of National Institute of Health funding for Departments of Psychiatry for over 25 years. We have over 130 full-time faculty members who are principal investigators on primary research grants. Accordingly, we offer a wide array of resources for research and education.

  • Mentors and the Department provide research resources needed during residency.
  • Travel fund awards are offered to support travel to scientific conferences and/or training courses in specialized methods.
  • Funding for research activities and salary supplements begin in residency, and continue beyond as needed, to support the preparation of a K award application.

Resources within the Greater Pitt Community

In addition to individual research programs and centers within our Department, residents also have access to mentors across the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University research programs. For example, PRP residents can work with faculty members who are part of the Center for Neuroscience University of Pittsburgh and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition.

Pitt’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) propels trainees in their research endeavors in multiple ways, such as helping them find study participants, providing seed funding for an idea with potential, or giving guidance on the dos and don’ts of clinical research.

Additionally, the Research Career Development Institute (CDI) for Psychiatry is a multi-faceted longitudinal training experience for young psychiatrists and PhD researchers interested in successful research careers in academic psychiatry.

Residents are also supported in applications for training and travel awards, such as APA Resident Fellowship OpportunitiesACNP Travel AwardsSOBP Travel Awards, and AACAP Awards.
