Nationwide, there has been increasing awareness about the serious risks for physician burnout during residency training, with psychiatry having its own additional risk factors (including fear and exposure to patient violence and suicide).
In addition to the WPH Resident Well-Being initiative, our department hired a clinical psychologist for our residents and fellows to decrease barriers to assure easy access to confidential, high-quality, short-term counseling free of charge, and/or mental health referrals in the community. Below are some additional useful resources to foster resident and fellow well-being at UPMC:

- UPMC Resident and Fellow Assistance Program (RFAP). Free, 24/7, confidential support for UPMC residents and fellows and household members through the Life Solutions program.
- CURBside (Confidential UPMC Referrals for Behavioral-Health) - Free, discreet, personalized mental health referral service for UPMC physicians and their family members.
- UPMC Physicians for Physicians. Free, confidential peer support with a UPMC resident or attending for any work-related stressor or adverse event
- UPMC Critical Incident Stress Management As Soon As Possible (CISM ASAP) Service - Free, 24/7, confidential individual and/or group support for any work-related event by the Critical Incident Stress Management multi-disciplinary team.
