The Psychiatry Residency Training program at the University of Pittsburgh is reputed for its clinical and research excellence and is consistently ranked high in the Doximity poll. In 2015 it was ranked seventh overall. The program receives more than 1300 applications per year, and 17 residents are accepted into the program annually. The diversity of the cohorts makes it difficult to describe the typical resident. Residents come from all over the US, bringing together a rich mix of cultures and experiences.

With more than 210 faculty, the Department of Psychiatry and WPIC provides its residents with abundant opportunity for training and mentoring in a vast range of clinical and research areas. The variety and quantity of WPIC?s behavioral health programs, coupled with the diversity of the greater Pittsburgh area, also provide residents with the opportunity to rotate through many programs and hospitals, and encounter many varied and interesting clinical cases. To support the career trajectories of the residents, a choice of two tracks is available within the General Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program: the Academic Administrator-Clinician Educator (AACE) track and the Psychiatry Research Pathway.
