Daniel Buysse, MD, Receives University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute Marlin Mickle Outstanding Innovator Award
Congratulations to Daniel Buysse, MD (Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine, and Clinical and Translational Science, and UPMC Endowed Chair in Sleep Medicine), who has received the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute Marlin Mickle Outstanding Innovator Award, presented to a Pitt faculty member who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to innovation throughout a distinguished career.
Dr. Buysse is an internationally recognized expert in research on sleep and circadian rhythm, focusing on the measurement of sleep in humans, on insomnia, and on behavioral interventions to improve sleep. His pivotal work on sleep disorders has set national and international practice standards for the diagnosis, assessment, pathophysiology, and treatment of insomnia. Dr. Buysse was honored for his development of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), recognized as a gold standard for measuring sleep quality for academic and clinical studies, as well as for his innovations in the development in several additional sleep measurement tools. The PSQI has been translated into more than 50 languages, was copyrighted in 2010, and is one of the most licensed pieces of intellectual property in Pitt’s history.
