Addressing Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities through Research

Crystal Barksdale, PhD, MPH Program Director, Division of Community Health and Population Science, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

We are delighted to welcome Crystal Barksdale, PhD, MPH for a Special Guest Lecture on December 1, 2023 when she will discuss strategies the National Institutes of Health are using to address the needs of underserved populations through research. 

Dr. Barksdale is the Program Director of the Division of Community Health and Population Science for the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and manages a diverse research portfolio related to community-, social-, and structural-level determinants and interventions. Prior to joining NIMHD, she was the Acting Deputy Director and Chief of the Minority Mental Health Research Program in the National Institute of Mental Health, Office for Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity. Dr. Barksdale previously worked in federal and academic positions providing program evaluation leadership and subject matter expertise on children’s mental health projects focused on depression and suicide, disparities in child-serving systems, and culturally and linguistically appropriate interventions for at-risk youth and their families. A licensed clinical psychologist, she received her doctorate in clinical psychology from George Washington University, her master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The indicated number of clock hours of continuing education is provided through UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital’s Office of Educational Resources and Planning, a PA-approved provider of social work continuing education in accordance with all the applicable educational and professional standards of the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapist.
