The 8th Annual Clinician Educator Showcase: A Day Dedicated to Clinical Innovations, Quality Improvement & Career Development
On October 10, 2019, Pitt Psychiatry clinician-educator faculty and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH) trainees and staff filled the WPH meeting rooms, classrooms and auditorium for the Clinician Educator Showcase.
The Showcase, now in its eighth year, is an annual opportunity to learn in-depth about promising clinical innovations and the latest quality improvement initiatives. The day also provides ample time to connect with colleagues, exchange ideas and receive career development guidance.
The first part of the day featured an interactive poster session on a wide range of topics, as well as concurrent lunchtime roundtable discussions that offered opportunities to learn about time management, career development and establishing effective mentoring teams.
Dr. David Lewis (Chair, Department of Psychiatry) welcomed attendees to the afternoon program, which opened with the perennially popular Speed Dat(a)ing, five-minute resident presentations on current behavioral health issues:
- Rewired: Positive Psychology (Amanda Downey, MD)
- CPR Status Documentation in the Inpatient Psychiatric Setting (Elizabeth Hale, MD)
- Moving to a Neuroscience-based Nomenclature in Medical Education (Alex Israel, MD)
- Long-acting Injectable Antipsychotic Care Coordination in the Medical Hospital (Elizabeth Kistler, MD)
- Overdose Education and Naloxone Dispensing Clinical Value Project (Scott Steele, MD)
Camellia Herisko, DNP, MSN, RN, PMHCNS-BC, CRNP (Chief Nursing Officer & Vice President of Operations and Patient Care Services, WPH) delivered a plenary session on “Converting Tension into Teams,” a leader’s perspective on how to make interdisciplinary behavioral health care effective, which was followed by an energetic Q&A and discussion among attendees.
Drs. Jason Rosenstock and James Tew competed in Battle of the Clinician Educators, presenting arguments in favor of two teaching methods—Pecha Kucha vs. Chalk Talk—for medical student education (a session that was equally informative and hilarious).
Finally, in rooms filled nearly to capacity, Pitt Psychiatry faculty-led breakout sessions on telepsychiatry, patient safety, pecha kucha, the chalk talk, setting boundaries with patients, use of Cerner and Epic, and collaboration and communication across the continuum of care.
