Seventh Annual Clinician Educator Showcase Highlights Innovations in Teaching, Clinical Care, and Program Development
The Department of Psychiatry and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH) welcomed over 150 clinician educators, trainees and staff to WPSY on October 11, 2018 for the Seventh Annual Clinician Educator Showcase.
The Showcase kicked off with a luncheon and interactive poster session that provided plenty of networking opportunities.
Two members of our faculty were recognized for their outstanding service and many contributions to the Department, WPH, and to the field of mental health care during a special awards ceremony. Christine Michaels, MSHMA, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Keystone division, presented John "Jack" Rozel, MD, MSL, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Adjunct Professor of Law, with the NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. The Department celebrated Dr. John McGonigle's appointment as Clinician Emeritus and his many educational and clinical contributions to the University of Pittsburgh, WPH, and the community.
This year’s plenary address was presented by Kenneth Nash, MD, MMM, Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. Using examples from his own career, Dr. Nash encouraged clinician educators to take advantage of the career pathways, mentorship, and opportunities to explore different areas of interest to shape their own careers, enhance medical education, and improve care for people living with mental illness.
Five talented early-career clinician educators presented findings from a wide range of projects they led as part of the Speed Dat(a)ing session.
Experts from the Department of Psychiatry, WPH, and the mental health community led a series of interactive afternoon breakout sessions designed to help participants enhance their skill sets and apply what they learned to their own clinical and educational initiatives.
