Pitt Promotes Michael Marshal, PhD to Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has promoted Michael Marshal, PhD to the rank of Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. 

Dr. Marshal was appointed to the faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2005 after completing the Department of Psychiatry Clinical Psychology Internship Program and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Department's federally funded Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program. His academic work has focused on describing and understanding mental health disparities among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth.  Dr. Marshal is the Principal Investigator for two R01 grants funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which are focused on trajectories of substance use and comorbid mental health problems among teenagers and young adults. He is also a Co-Investigator of two other NIH-funded studies, which focus on (A) puberty and threat/reward processing in the trajectory from anxiety to depression, and (B) the association between obesity and risky sexual behaviors in teenagers. In addition to publishing numerous articles in peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Marshal's research has been presented at 48 scientific meetings throughout the United States as well as in Austria, Canada, and Mexico. 

As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Marshal helped establish clinical services for LGBT youth at WPIC and in the Adolescent Medicine Clinic at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.  The latter clinic provides four hours per week of pro bono services to inner city youth in need of mental health evaluations and care, and is also used as a supervised teaching site for clinical psychology training. He collaborates extensively with faculty and students from the Center for LGBT Research in Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH). He is a dedicated teacher and mentor who has guided the research activities of several junior faculty. Dr. Marshal works closely with students in the School of Medicine and GSPH, helping them design and analyze scientifically sound research projects as well as guiding them in their professional development.
