APA/SAMHSA Fellowship
Dr. Joseph Tasosa, a PGY-3 resident at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at UPMC, has been selected for the American Psychiatric Association/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program.
Dr. Tasosa earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and an MBA and a Master of Science in Social and Applied Economics from Wright State University. His interests include health disparities research, quality improvement and outcomes research, cost-effectiveness analysis and telepsychiatry. He will use the SAMHSA fellowship to explore ways to educate local high school teachers on the signs and symptoms of ADHD in line with the ?Typical or Troubled ®? national campaign. Dr. Tasosa is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and a native of Zimbabwe.
The minority fellowship program was created to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in mental health and substance abuse care by providing specialized training to psychiatry residents and medical students interested in serving minority communities. Fellows are selected on the basis of their commitment to serve ethnic minority populations, their awareness of the importance of culture in mental health, their interest in the interrelationship between mental health/illness and transcultural factors, and their demonstrated leadership abilities.
