Accomplishments of Department of Psychiatry Faculty and Residents Highlighted at Annual Meeting of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine
The Department of Psychiatry was well represented at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) in New Orleans, Louisiana. The theme for the meeting was The Art and Science of Communication in Psychosomatic Medicine.
Department of Psychiatry faculty and residents were featured speakers for 11 presentations and courses, and the poster session featured the work of 10 residents and their faculty mentors. Poster presentations highlighted their work in a broad range of areas including: educational and clinical interventions for women with post-partum depression and trauma-based syndromes, psychiatric consultation to individuals with severe anorexia nervosa, psychiatric management after severe ocular self-injury, integration of psychiatric care into internal medicine services, treatment refractory neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and outcomes of specialty interest groups for psychiatry residents. The session provided trainees with the opportunity to share their expertise and results of their many collaborative projects.
Our faculty were involved in the planning of the annual meeting and the implementation of other APM initiatives through their service on several committees and special interest groups. Dr. Priya Gopalan, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service, is an active member of the Women's Health Special Interest Group, for which she provides mentorship and opportunities for collaboration to our residents and fellows. Dr. Pierre Azzam, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship Program, serves on the Annual Meeting Committee and Online Education Subcommittee. In addition to leading the Transplantation Psychiatry Special Interest Group, Dr. Andrea DiMartini, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Surgery, and Clinical and Translational Science, is an active member of the Communications Committee. Dr. Roberto Ortiz-Aguayo, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Associate Residency Training Director, is a member of the Oral Papers and Posters Subcommittee. We appreciate their service to the APM and their efforts to make the meeting a success.
