Dr. Susanne Ahmari Honored with Awards from Society of Biological Psychiatry and Carnegie Science Center for Basic Science Research

The Department of Psychiatry is proud to announce that Dr. Susanne Ahmari has been presented with two awards in recognition of her significant contributions to scientific research.

The Society for Biological Psychiatry will present Dr. Ahmari with the A.E. Bennett Research Award for Basic Sciences at a special ceremony on May 13, 2016 at its annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.  The award is presented by the Society to a young investigator to stimulate international research in biological psychiatry.  

The Carnegie Science Center will also honor Dr. Ahmari in May.  The organization will present her with the 2016 Emerging Female Scientist Carnegie Science Award at the 20th Annual Carnegie Science Awards gala on May 6, 2016 in Pittsburgh.   The Carnegie Science Awards program was established to recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in western Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ahmari is a physician scientist and internationally recognized expert on the mechanisms of obsessive compulsive disorder.   She is a pioneer in the use of optogenetics to uncover mechanisms of psychiatric disease.  In addition to conducting innovative basic science research, the Ahmari Laboratory serves as an important training ground for students and postdoctoral scholars interested in pursuing careers in psychiatric research.
