Dean Salisbury, PhD Awarded NARSAD Independent Investigator Award
The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation has selected Dean Salisbury, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, with a NARSAD Independent Investigator Award.
Dr. Salisbury was recruited to the Department of Psychiatry faculty in 2012 and serves as the Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Research Laboratory. The laboratory utilizes multimodal brain imaging to examine thought disturbance (cognitive-level) and basic auditory processing abnormalities (sensory-level) in psychosis, and specializes in human neurophysiology. The goal of Dr. Salisbury's work is to increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of psychosis.
The NARSAD Independent Investigator Award will provide Dr. Salisbury with the opportunity to investigate neurophysiological biomarkers in first episode schizophrenia based on the ability of frontal lobe attention to increase temporal lobe auditory signals. He and his team will work to develop these simple biomarkers to eventually detect individuals with schizophrenia prior to their first psychotic break. Early identification is essential for treatments that could prevent the emergence of psychosis and its life-long debilitating effects.
