Psychiatric Services Features Residents' Efforts to Assist the Homeless
Psychiatric Services has featured the efforts of psychiatry residents at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) to raise funds and awareness to help homeless individuals in the greater Pittsburgh area. The article highlights how the residents? partnership with Operation Safety Net (OSN), a nonprofit organization that provides much needed services and support to the homeless, led to their coordination of an annual Bowling for Socks event to raise funds for OSN and to support their efforts to provide the homeless with basic necessities as well as general and behavioral health services.
Participants in the Bowling for Socks event include staff, students, community members, residents, attending psychiatrists, and service users. Each bowler solicits sponsors to contribute funds or donate basic supplies that can be used to support individuals lacking housing that live in our area. Residents have said that their work with Operation Safety Net and their participation in the annual Bowling for Socks event has increased their understanding of the challenges facing the homeless and that it has enhanced their skills as practitioners.
