Work of NARSAD Young Investigator Grantees Highlighted by Brain & Behavior Research Foundation

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) recently featured the work of two Department of Psychiatry NARSAD grantees focusing on the mental health of older Americans. In its recent quarterly publication, the Foundation highlighted research being conducted by Drs. Carmen Andreescu and Jordan Karp in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry.

Carmen Andreescu, MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, is studying neural markers of treatment response in late-life generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).  With support from a NARSAD Young Investigator Award, Dr. Andreescu is working on identifying biological predictors of treatment response in elderly patients with GAD that could lead to further development of more personalized and effective treatment of the disorder.

Jordan F. Karp, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, is a 2011 NARSAD Young Investigator Award recipient and is testing the safety and efficacy of buprenorphrine for treatment-resistant depression in older adults. The award has also provided Dr. Karp with the opportunity to translate function magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results into more precise treatment planning for elderly patients.
