The Department of Psychiatry is delighted to welcome Xiao-Jing Wang, PhD from New York University on September 15, 2023 as our first speaker for our Distinguished Scientist Lecture Series.
Dr. Wang is an expert in the area of computational neuroscience. After earning a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the Free University of Brussels in 1987, he held faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh, Brandeis University and Yale University, and served as a visiting professor at École Normale Supérieure in Paris and Tsinghua University in Beijing. In 2023 he relocated to New York where he currently serves as Distinguished Global Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Swartz center for Theoretical Neuroscience. Research in the Wang Lab aims to increase our understanding of dynamical behavior and function of neural circuits. Using theoretical and modeling approaches, in close collaboration with experimentalists, Dr. Wang and his team investigate the neural mechanisms and computational principles of cognitive processes, such as decision-making (how we make a choice among multiple options) and working memory (how our brain holds and manipulates information "online" in the absence of sensory stimulation). In the relatively new field of computational psychiatry, Dr. Wang is collaborating with psychiatrists and using his lab's models to examine cellular and circuit abnormalities that may be causally linked to cognitive deficits associated with mental disorders such as schizophrenia.
This lecture will be offered as a hybrid event. Join us in-person in the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital Auditorium or attend remotely using the Zoom information below:
