Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: 12 Years of Clinical Experience Treating Depression

Linda Carpenter, MD Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and  Director of the Butler Neuromodulation Research Facility, Brown University

We will welcome Linda Carpenter, MD on February 4, 2022 as our featured speaker for the Distinguished Scientist Lecture SeriesDr. Carpenter is Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and  Director of the Butler Neuromodulation Research Facility, which promotes the incorporation of brain stimulation technology in the clinical research of Brown-affiliated researchers investigating brain function and pathology.

Dr. Carpenter's research investigates the mechanisms and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, with an emphasis on neuromodulation tools and intervention. Her work includes characterization of biological correlates of depression, and discovery of risk markers such as neuroendocrine/neuroimmune stress response, and genetic risk markers as mediators of biological consequences of early life adverse environment. More recently, she's developed expertise in novel brain stimulation therapies (VNS, TMS, DBS, tDCS) for medication-resistant depression and conducted clinical trials evaluating efficacy and safety of investigational devices as Principal Investigator. She is Deputy Director of a NIGMS-funded COBRE Center for Neuromodulation Research at Butler Hospital, and Director of the Center's Neuromodulation/Neuroimaging Core.

Our lectures will take place via Zoom due to current COVID19 safety guidelines.
