Rest-Activity Rhythms in Mood Disorders
Join us on March 1st when Dr. Stephen Smagula will be our featured speaker for our Sleep Grand Rounds series.
In his presentation Dr. Smagula will describe the rest-activity rhythm (RAR) patterns associated with symptoms of mood disorders. He will also consider the implications of these findings for mechanistic research and clinical translational.
Dr. Smagula's research focuses on the role of behavioral disruption in the development of late-life depression, and how behavioral (rest-activity rhythm and sleep-wake characteristics) and neurobiological (brain structural pathology) factors inter-relate to cause depression. After earning a PhD in Neuroepidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, as a postdoctoral scholar he obtained additional training and conducted research focusing on sleep medicine and late-life mood disorders. Dr. Smagula is currently investigating depression in dementia caregivers and linking brain structure and sleep-wake risks with support from a career development (K01) award from the National Institute of Mental Health.
