It’s Not Just about Kids or Only for Specialists: What Non-specialists Need to Know to Support Autistic Adults

On December 20, 2024 the Department welcomes Abigail Schlesinger, MD, Shelly Kucherer, MD, and Ligia Antezana, PhD as they present a Clinical Grand Rounds focusing on adult autism. As prevalence rates of autism spectrum disorder continue to increase, this will continue to become a common diagnosis that is seen within all psychiatric clinics. Our grand rounds will be focused on the assessment and management of a patient with level 1 autism spectrum disorder and how to manage psychiatric comorbidities associated with this along with other treatment considerations. We will also discuss how to diagnose level 1 autism and signs and symptoms to look for if you suspect this. 

Abigail Schlesinger, MDDr. Schlesinger is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Clinical Chief for UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital's Child and Adolescent and Integrated Services. She also serves as the Medical Director of the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, Child and Family Counseling Center, the Center for Independence, and the Children’s Telephonic Psychiatric Services (TiPS) at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in addition to providing clinical services in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities.
 

Shelly Dr. Kucherer is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Associate Medical Director for the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital's Adult Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders. 

 

Ligia Antezano, PhDDr. Antezano is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the REAACT Research Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where she is collaborating with colleagues to to identify to identify mechanisms and predictors of non-suicidal self-injury in autistic adults.
