India Comes to the Veterans Administration: The Impact of Global Mental Health Research on Veterans’ Care

The Psychiatric Research Infrastructure for Intervention and Implementation in India (PRIIIA) training program, the Behavioral Health Service line at the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System, the Government of India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh will host a groundbreaking Symposium on the impact of global mental health research.  It is funded by a grant from the Fogarty International Center and the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This symposium is aimed at improving mental health care for Veterans in particular, and for people across the world in general.  It will highlight work being conducted by Indian mental health researchers, faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and staff members at the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System.  Our goal is to establish links between attendees at the symposium to enable future collaborations.

Location: Learning Exchange, Building 29, 4100 Allequippa St(University Drive), Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Pittsburgh PA 15240
Key Participants: Any individual interested in learning more about how Global Mental Health Research can improve mental healthcare in Veterans and the general population.

The symposium will feature a Welcome Session with speakers including David Lewis, M.D., Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, Anantha Shekhar, M.D., Ph.D., Dean of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Ashoo Grover, M.D., Deputy Director, ICMR and Donald Koenig, JD, Director of VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Sessions will cover a range of topics, including Behavioral Interventions in Depression; Alcohol Use, Life Skills Training, Resilience; Implementation Science; Special Topics in Psychiatry; Exercise / Yoga and Mental Health; Suicide Prevention; and a Poster Session featuring the work of our Trainees from across India.
 
Key Objectives:

Foster Collaboration: To establish links between attendees at the symposium to enable future collaborations.

Global Impact: Develop strategies to improve mental health care not only for Veterans, but also for individuals in diverse communities around the world.
Attendees will have the opportunity to network with global researchers, practitioners, and advocates in the field, laying the groundwork for future partnerships that aim to enhance mental health support systems globally.
