University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Promotes Raymond Pan, MD, to Associate Professor of Psychiatry

We are pleased to announce that Raymond Pan, MD, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Psychiatry by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Pan received his MD from the University of Connecticut, and completed residency training at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH). Following residency, Dr. Pan completed a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship, as well as a National Institute of Mental Health T32 clinical fellowship. Following additional training and clinical experience, Dr. Pan was appointed to the Pitt Department of Psychiatry as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He additionally holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

A Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Pan is a leading expert on the intersection of mild traumatic brain injury, particularly concussion, and mental health. He has developed two highly regarded clinics at UPMC. First, he created a unique collaborative care psychiatry clinic embedded within the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program to treat individuals who experience the co-occurrence of psychiatric symptoms following concussion. Subsequently, Dr. Pan began to offer psychiatric assessments and treatment at the Student Athlete Clinic, where he sees student athletes coordinated with a neuropsychologist and physical therapist. He additionally collaborates on research studies designed to advance our understanding of psychiatric symptoms and concussion.

Dr. Pan has made critical contributions to clinician education. He has worked with psychiatry residents in the Student Athlete Clinic, and in the Psychiatric Emergency Services department at WPH, and has supervised sports medicine neuropsychology fellows. Dr. Pan developed a UPMC Physician Resources Continuing Medical Education course on the role of the psychiatrist in concussion management, and co-authored the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP) Sports Psychiatry Curriculum for the ISSP Certificate of Additional Training in Sports Psychiatry.

Dr. Pan is generous with service activities at the University and UPMC, as well as regionally, nationally, and internationally. He serves on a Department of Psychiatry diversity, equity, and inclusivity committee, as well as on multiple UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program committees. He also contributes his time to service activities with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the International Society of Sports Psychiatry.

“Dr. Pan is a leader and an innovator in integrated care, sports psychiatry, and concussion care, one of UPMC’s only psychiatrists with expertise in the management of patients with enduring post-concussion symptoms,” said David Lewis, MD (Chair, Department of Psychiatry). “He is well known and highly regarded in his field, and his clinical work is enhanced by his participation in research. As a teacher and mentor, Dr. Pan makes invaluable contributions to the training of physicians interested in mental health and traumatic brain injury.”
