Transitional Recovery and Comprehensive Recovery Units Expand into Renovated Space

As part of its ongoing efforts to meet the needs of patients and families, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC expanded its Transitional Recovery Unit (TRU) and Comprehensive Recovery Unit (CRU).  Charles E. Kahn, MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, serves as medical director for both units.  He has overseen the development of the TRU into a 31-bed unit that focuses on sub-acute care for patients whose conditions include serious and persistent mental illness. In addition, Dr. Kahn managed the creation of the CRU in a newly renovated area on Western Psychiatric?s seventh floor. The 10-bed CRU opened during the summer 2011 and provides step-down services for patients whose conditions include serious and persistent mental illnesses.
