Charles F. (Chip) Reynolds III, MD Runs for President-Elect
of the American Psychiatric Association

Charles F. (Chip) Reynolds III, MD is a candidate for President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).  Dr. Reynolds began his academic career as a psychiatric resident at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry in 1974 and has established an international reputation for his outstanding contributions to scientific research, education and training, and public policy issues focusing on mental health.

Throughout his career, Dr. Reynolds has provided clear direction for the field and has been a strong advocate for the advancement of psychiatry both nationally and internationally.  In addition to his clinical activities and his advocacy efforts, Dr. Reynolds is an internationally renowned scientist with a reputation for collaboration and multidisciplinary research, particularly in the areas of sleep medicine and geriatric psychiatry.  He has published his findings in high impact medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Lancet, and the British Medical Journal.  He has also served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Psychiatry and JAMA Psychiatry, and is the newly appointed editor of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.  Dr. Reynolds is passionate about teaching and mentorship, and has been a mentor to many in our field from undergraduates to junior faculty.  He has served for over 15 years as the Program Director for two NIMH-funded T32 training grants focusing on Clinical Research Training in Psychiatry and Late-Life Mood Disorders, and more recently as Co-Director of an R25 grant that provides for Training Future Generations of Mental Health Researchers. He also directs the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Center of Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry and Training, a program established to support the development of faculty in geriatric psychiatry whose research, teaching, and service help the nation meet the health care needs of our older citizens.

“This is an exciting time for psychiatry and we have much to be proud of as psychiatric physicians,” said Dr. Reynolds. “Now more than ever we are in a position to extend the reach of psychiatric medicine to relieve the suffering of persons afflicted with mental illness and changing health policy that will allow us to extend the reach.”

Dr. Reynolds’ top emphases as APA President include continuing efforts to make DSM-5 a living, breathing document; advocating for psychiatry and mental health services in medical homes; engaging psychiatry in prevention/interventions, particularly for underserved Americans with stigma and access issues; promoting engagement of APA and psychiatry in global mental health outreach; and attending to “pipeline” issues of recruiting students into psychiatry by promoting excellence in teaching and mentoring, and extending the excitement of clinical neuroscience to residency programs.
