Diagnosing Postpartum Depression with a Brain Scan

Eydie L. Moses-Kolko, MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, was recently featured in a Time Magazine article highlighting her research on the use of brain-imaging in new mothers that may help to identify women who are vulnerable to post-partum depression.  In this study, Dr. Moses-Kolko found interesting differences in the way mothers? brain regions interacted and that women suffering from post-partum depression showed a dulled response in the regions of the brain responsible for regulating empathy and emotion compared to mothers without the disorder.
