Sarah Pedersen, PhD, Honored by Research Society on Alcohol and the University of Pittsburgh

Congratulations to Sarah Pedersen, PhD (Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Clinical and Translational Science, and Psychology), who has recently been recognized with both national and University honors.
Dr. Pedersen was selected for the prestigious Research Society on Alcohol Dora Goldstein Distinguished in the Sciences Award. This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated excellence and creativity in alcohol research, and a commitment to mentoring throughout their career. In particular, it celebrates the work of alcohol researchers who advance and improve health equity in their research.
Dr. Pedersen’s research focuses on the complex interplay of individual biology and social and environmental determinants of health that increase the risk for alcohol problems, alcohol use disorder, and cannabis use. Dr. Pedersen is currently investigating the dynamic transactions between stressors, reactivity, and cannabis craving/motives to identify the processes that contribute to cannabis use outcomes for young adults. She additionally co-leads a longitudinal study to prospectively study the onset, course, and causes of alcohol use disorder in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (MPI: Brooke Molina, PhD).
In addition, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has selected Dr. Pedersen as a recipient of the 2026 Pitt Scientist Well-being Award. The honor reflects Dr. Pedersen’s exceptional commitment to fostering well-being and making a meaningful impact on the lives of others in the School of Medicine and across Pitt.
