Concentration in Geriatric Psychiatry

The Concentration in Geriatric Psychiatry is designed for residents who wish to lead the field in caring for an underserved and rapidly growing population. Older adults bring extraordinary life experience and wisdom, and our faculty consider it a privilege to partner in their care. We are equally committed to mentoring the next generation of psychiatrists through rigorous clinical training, thoughtful mentorship, and exposure to the unique rewards and challenges of geriatric mental health care. This concentration prepares residents to deliver compassionate, expert care while advancing standards of practice and inspiring careers in geriatric psychiatry.

Goals and Objectives


Through this concentration, residents will:

  • Develop proficiency in assessing and treating the full spectrum of neurocognitive disorders in older adults, including associated behavioral and psychological symptoms;
  • Build advanced expertise in caring for older adults with treatment‑resistant psychiatric illness;
  • Strengthen skills in managing psychiatric disorders in medically complex patients;
  • Contribute to the evolving body of knowledge in geriatric psychiatry through research, quality improvement, scholarly activity, or education;
  • Assume leadership roles within multidisciplinary teams across diverse geriatric care settings, including outpatient, inpatient, and long‑term care environments;
  • Gain experience upholding the rights and dignity of older adults by thoughtfully navigating complex ethical, legal, and social issues in clinical care.
