Second Annual Psychiatry Research Pathway Symposium Features Innovative Resident Research

The Psychiatry Research Pathway (PRP) Symposium provides UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital residents engaged in research the opportunity to deliver formal presentations to an audience of fellow residents, faculty mentors and directors of T32 postdoctoral research programs. The program comprised a 20-minute talk from each resident on their current research, followed by insightful feedback and energetic discussion from attendees.

The 2019 PRP Symposium marked the second occurrence of the successful annual event. Last year’s inaugural symposium earned praise from faculty, as well as from residents, who valued the chance to receive thoughtful feedback on their research and to explore opportunities for collaboration at the social hour following the event.

The 2019 PRP Symposium presentations from the following residents:

  • Shinnyi (Cindy) Chou, MD, PhD (PRP Vice-Chief Resident)—Cell-Type Specific Alterations in Type 1 Cannabinoid Receptors in the Prefrontal Cortex of Patients with Schizophrenia: Proof of Concept
  • Daniel Wonjae Chung, MD, PhD—Nanoscale Probing of Synaptic Architecture in Human Brain Tissues
  • Kristen Eckstrand, MD, PhD—The Influence of Trauma Exposure on Imaging Biomarkers for Psychiatric Distress in Young Adults
  • Matt Germanita, MD, PhD—Neural Basis of Reversal Learning
  • Alfredo Sklar, MD, PhD (PRP Chief Resident)—Visual Processing in New-Onset Psychosis: From Top-Down to Bottom-Up
