Tamar Carmel, MD Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, UPP Psychiatry
John Carter Brooks, MD Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, UPP Psychiatry

This Clinical Grand Rounds is designed to help mental health providers enhance their competencies to care for LGBTQ patients. This rounds will feature presentations by two of our local experts. Tamar Carmel, MD, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry specializing in integrative care and community psychiatry. John Carter Brooks, MD is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director for the ADHD Across the Lifespan Clinic at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. Drs.Carmel and Carter Brooks will discuss the ways in which mental health care needs to be altered when treating LGBTQ people. On top of the mental health concerns they may already have, individuals in the LGBTQ community often also face additional stressors, such as societal prejudices and obstacles from healthcare providers. They will also outline the specific obstacles and stressors that LGBTQ people experience in their searches for mental health care, discuss the changes that need to occur both in mental health care settings and among health care providers, and offer suggestions for mental health care workers to better treat their LGBTQ patients.
